loaner bassinet?

Does anyone have a bassinet or a cradle that we can borrow? We are planning on getting a crib, but I have decided we want to have the baby in our room at night for the first little bit. And I'm not into buying something that I will only use for a few months.

If anyone has any ideas as well (other than the laundry basket, I've already ruled that one out), let me know!

You'll probably veto this as well, but as a small child I was relegated to my parent's sock drawer.

(They weren't bad parents, they just were moving the next week.)

We bought a little sleep thingy for Mary when we were in St. Louis. It's basically a sleeping pad with some little sides on it. The best thing about it was that it took up very little space and didn't cost a lot, but was still made for a baby. It worked very well all the way until late last year, when Mary was too big for it. We can mail it to you (it's quite light) or give you more details if you're more interested.

Scott, please just send me information about that sleep thingy. There is no need to ship it out here, I can look into it myself if you just direct me where to look. Thanks!

One thing I know a lot of people do is to buy one of those play yard things that has a bassinet inside the top part of it and use it until the baby is too big for it. Then you take the bassinet part out and just use the rest of the play pen for traveling, overnight stays at relatives' houses, etc; I promise you'll use the play yard more than you think you will. I couldn't have survived without one. And a kid up to like 2 years can sleep in it. Just an idea. You can find them for under $100 at walmart.

I think it's the First Years Secure Sleeper, as shown here: http://www.amazon.com/First-Years-Close-Secure-Sleeper/dp/B00012CHFI

It looks like you can get a better deal from the individual sellers on Amazon than from Amazon itself. Or, as I said before, you can just use ours.

How about a laundry basket?.... just a thought.

Sorry, I don't have anything... I borrowed a bassinet myself. But, if you can't borrow one, and are going to buy something after all, I'd recommend KSL or Craigs list. I've gotten lots of baby things from there for cheap

I'd suggested to Brett putting the baby in a subwoofer. But if that doesn't work, I'd second Karen's pack n play idea. Aidan has slept in that quite a few times and we've taken ours on a number of trips. He'll be 2 pretty soon and we still use it at Grandparents houses, etc.
Since you have some time still, you can keep your eyes open for deals. We found one on a clearance at target for something like $40.

I gave away my bassinet last year. Sorry. :(

Betsy! It has been a while since I've been on your blog. You are having a baby in 30 days (according to your countdown)! Congratulations.
All we bought for my daughter was a pack and play/play yard. It's a good size for your bedroom and she still sleeps in it. We never bought a crib.
My parents also put my brother in a dresser drawer as a baby. I guess its a pretty common thing?
